Research carried out by the Northumbria University sleep centre found that taking a bath an hour, to two hours, before bed is the ideal time for helping you to achieve maximum benefits; having a hot bath increases your core body temperature, then when you get out, this starts to decrease, which is when you start to get those sleep-inducing benefits, which can not only help you fall asleep quicker, but also improve the quality of your sleep.
